postheadericon An overview of the best websites to play free online games – Part 1

Everyone needs a minute to just enjoy themselves, and what better way than with an online game? Take a break from work, studying, or just have some fun with my favorite website.

Winster.com is a free online gaming community that offers a variety of fun games. The site also offers an added bonus: you get to help each other out! Instead of playing against each other, competitors are turned into partners. This very distinct aspect of the site makes it much more fun than other gaming communities. Winnie’s motto is “Where friends help friends,” and she really means it.

Winster.com offers ten different games, a points system, a ratings system, and member profiles. There’s a great list of prizes to choose from, too. As you play, earn points and redeem them for a gift of your choice. Prizes include things like a Burt’s Bees Starter Pack, movie tickets, and gift certificates.

To play the games for free, just sign up for a username and pick a game. If you want to earn points faster, there are membership opportunities, too. But since I’m a broke college kid, I like to play for free. This way, I get 200 spins a day, plus 500 extra points when I launch a game from the downloadable toolbar. Games include “Bingo Bash,” “Poker Pals,” “Match Makers,” and my personal favorite, “Slot Social.”

All of the games have the same basic format: players “spin” for pieces and match them up to earn points. For example, in “Slot Social,” players spin for “cards.” When five matching “cards” are spun, cash them in for points. So if you have, say, five diamonds, you can cash those in for 315 points. Cherries will get you 70 points, but a Jackpot will get you 1,650!

The “Slot Social” game, and many others on the site, are casino-style in that players “spin” for matches. The difference here is that each position is spun separately. This way, players can continue spinning until all five slots match. And remember that whole “friends helping friends” thing? Here’s where it really comes in handy. Players can play in groups of up to five, in a chat room-like setting. So say you’ve spun four grapes in a row, but your fifth position ends up with a diamond. No problem! Trade that diamond with someone else in the room for a grape, and you’ve got all five matches. Not only that, you could have just helped out your neighbor, if they happened to be looking for a diamond. Or you could have just made a new friend!

Helping each other out is a major aspect of the website, and players have learned how to take advantage of that little bonus. “Jackpot,” or simply “JP,” as it’s known in the Winster world, is a popular game made up by frequent players. Everyone spins, and when someone comes up with a “Wild Card,” which matches any other card, or a “Winnie” (the Jackpot peice) it is saved by the players until enough have been saved for at least one person to cash out and earn a jackpot. From there, the game continues until everyone has earned a jackpot. It may be a little confusing for new players to pick up at first, but it’s a quick and easy way to make friends and earn tons of extra points at the same time.

I’ve played other online games in my spare time, but Winster.com is definitely my favorite. Trading cards, helping each other get Jackpots, and making new friends sets this site apart from the rest.
